시놉시스 SYNOPSIS
1988년 매립 이후 유령 도시가 된 제주도 탑동. 도심의 마지막 해녀 옥희는 홀로 물질을 하며 살아간다. 어느 날, 전 남편의 딸 은영이 찾아오고, 빚에 쫓긴 아들 경식은 준서를 맡기고 사라진다. 잠시 머물기로 한 은영은 옥희의 사고와 의붓 조카 준서의 등장으로 떠날 때를 놓치고, 그들과 불편한 동거를 시작한다. 딸의 양육권을 되찾기 위해 세탁소를 욕심내는 은영과 이를 지키려는 옥희는 갈등을 빚는다. 개발업자의 압박과 가족 간의 상처 속에서 은영은 잊고 지냈던 자신의 꿈을 다시 떠올리며 삶을 일구기 시작한다. 갈등하던 두 모녀는 점차 서로를 이해하고 보듬으며 연대를 만들어간다. 바다를 터전삼아 삶을 일구는 그녀들에게 바다는 더 이상 공포의 공간이 아니라, 꿈과 기억, 그리고 삶을 되찾는 치유의 장소로 다가온다. 『인생세탁소』는 버려진 도시 한 켠, 세탁소라는 작은 공간을 중심으로 잊힌 가족과 꿈이 다시 숨을 쉬는 과정을 따뜻하게 그려낸다.
Since the landfill project in 1988, Tap-dong in Jeju Island has become a ghost town. Ok-hee, the last remaining haenyeo (female diver) in the city, continues to dive alone. One day, Eun-young, the daughter of her ex-husband, shows up, and her own son Kyung-sik—chased by debt—leaves behind his child, Jun-seo, and disappears. Eun-young plans to stay briefly, but Ok-hee’s accident and the sudden arrival of Jun-seo delayed her departure, and the three begin an uneasy cohabitation. Eun-young, determined to regain custody of her daughter, wants to take over Ok-hee’s laundromat, while Ok-hee tries to protect it, leading to conflict. Amid mounting pressure from developers and deep-rooted family wounds, Eun-young begins to rediscover the dreams she had long forgotten and takes the first steps toward rebuilding her life. As tensions ease, the two women begin to understand, embrace, and support each other. To the women who have built their lives upon the sea, the ocean is no longer something to be feared, but a place to reclaim memory, meaning, and life itself. <인생세탁소>는 1988년 제주 탑동 매립 이후, 30년이 지난 오늘의 탑동을 배경으로, 거대자본의 침투 속에서 서서히 정체성을 잃어가는 한 가족의 이야기를 담아낸다. 바닷가 마을에서는 자본과 행정의 폭력이 세대를 넘어 반복되지만, 그 안에서 살아가는 소시민들은 삶의 터전을 하나씩 내어주고 만다. 관광객 유치라는 명분 아래 매립된 탑동은 이제 유령도시가 되었고, 삶의 바다를 지켜오던 해녀들마저 모두 떠났다. 그 속에서 도심의 마지막 해녀‘옥희’는 무엇을 지키려 하는가? 영화는 이 질문에서 출발한다. 거칠고 때로는 폭력적인 인물들을 통해, 상처를 안고 살아가는 이 시대의 치유되지 못한 사람들, 그럼에도 질기게 살아가야만 하는 서민들의 삶을 조명하고자 했다. 우리 주변의 이야기이며, 현실과 맞닿아 있는 삶의 민낯이기도 하다.
A Ray of Sunlight is set in present-day Tap-dong, Jeju, more than 30 years after the area was reclaimed from the sea in 1988. It tells the story of a family gradually losing its identity in the face of encroaching capital and unchecked development. In this coastal town, the violence of capital and government repeats itself across generations, and ordinary citizens are forced to give up their homes, one by one. Reclaimed under the banner of tourism, Tap-dong has become a ghost town, and the haenyeo who once guarded the sea have all disappeared. What, then, is the last haenyeo, Ok-hee, trying to protect? The film begins with this question. The film explores the lives of ordinary people—those who carry unhealed wounds and endure with quiet resilience—through characters who are rough, and at times violent. These are not distant stories, but the raw truths of the world we live in.
